Clean Up for Summer

ABBEY November 10th, 2009

Lots happening a Che Dane and I havnt had the camera out. Im trying desperately to clean up the scrub we call a backyard. The photo above is Chelsea @ 22weeks discovering the bird bath. Well its currently underneath the bush…lol The girls have loved me being out the backyard. Chelsea is fine and stays in sight, happy to ferret in the undergrowth but today Shiloh started crossing the road and going out the front. The yard is unfenced so unsure how to fix that problem.

Oh yeah and Chelsea taught herself to roll over, going on her back is not something that comes naturally to her but the damp earth and sunshine must of enticed her. Each night she has has one tick on her eye and what a drama to get it off. For some reason they dont seem to get Shy but we keep a close check on them anyway.

Oh, our garden isn’t fenced either actually but Honey is quite easily deterred as a dog and so we find that she doesn’t go past any area which has bushes and plants..so half of our garden is just encircled by thick bushes & plants and we’ve propped a bit of brushwood behind that but really, she could just push through if she wanted to but she never thinks to - she just see them and thinks they are impassable obstacles! ;-) Makes Honey very easy to live with as she’s quite easy to fool and gives up easily (makes her hard to motivate for training, though!) - so maybe if Shiloh is similar in temperament, you might find that you don’t need an actual proper fence to contain her but just some decorative foliage which gives the impression of obstacles?

Hey, rolling over is one trick I find hard with Honey. She used to lie on her back by herself when she was younger but then stopped doing it when she got older. I’m sure I could probably get her to roll over if I persist but it always seems such a struggle with her deep chest and she is very narrow (not much chest development!) that I feel sorry for her and so don’t push it. Also, some other trainers told me not to do it as it encourages bloat. Not sure I believe that but since I don’t really care if she doesn’t do the “rollover” trick, I’ve just decided to leave it…Having said all that, she can roll very easily when she wants to roll in somethign stinky in the park! So maybe she is just being lazy with me…! :)

Thats exactly how Chelsea is Hsin-yi she can leave the property but is content not to.. she also rolled over when she was younger but gave it up. The vets assistant tried to roll her and I insisted that Chels doesnt, he didnt believe me and ended up near throwing her, I was so ticked off but yesterday it was fun watching her try.. makes me laugh as shes all legs flapping.. hadnt heard the bloat thing.. for some reason the vets here arent as paranoid on bloat .. most tell you to rush to them if theres symptoms but then say theyve hardly seen it…

Luckily chels hasnt discovered the delights of something stinky to roll in..lol

Summer? It’s almost winter here. It’s cold and there is no snow…… boring. Oh, and I have to wear a stupid coat.

I love your winter Tucker… lots of snow pics :) I must admit Im a cool temperature girl… love long beach walks when the ocean is turbulent and the sand empty of people… gets so hot here you can only walk early morning or late evening… had to make a coat for Chels last year as she feels the cold

That is a big puppy! Sweet sweet! We are enjoying some yard time as well. Thank you for sharing your sweet memory. I have loved reading what each has remembered. I think your Dad was so wise and cool to do that. I might have to use that in 12 years or so. (sad!) My poor boy is going to be so close to this dog by the time we are done with this puppyhood. It is good for them though right? Being attached to a dog and then losing them is part of life, but sad!

I dont know if its good Kasha, but it is a fact of life that things die.. I think what is good is the 1001 experiences they have with a dog and the skills they learn that they take into adulthood… Campassion, sharing, caring, responsibility, gentleness those kind of things

Ooooh, ticks are yucky!! But the grass does feel nice to roll around in during the summer. :) Nala occasionally does this too.

Ticks are the pits Amber… Chels really swells up from them but they are a fact of life in Australia
